Eating Well Without a Six-Week Reservation

Charleston best-known dining rooms book out far ahead. The city is much more forgiving than that suggests.

The reservation problem is real, and narrow

A small number of Charleston restaurants book weeks or months out, and those are usually the ones that show up on national lists. It is easy to conclude from this that eating well here requires planning far in advance. It does not. The constraint applies to a short list of rooms, not to the city.

What actually works

Lunch is consistently easier than dinner at the same kitchens. Eating early or late opens up tables that do not exist at seven. Bar seating at many places is walk-in only and is often the better seat anyway. And a great deal of the best cooking in the area is happening away from the peninsula entirely, in neighborhoods where a same-day table is unremarkable.

Ask your hosts

Recommendations age quickly here, since kitchens and chefs move around more than most cities. A current suggestion from someone who eats locally is worth more than a list published a year ago.
